Currently, the minimum requirements for an entry level Firefighter are

  • 18 years old
  • US Citizen
  • High School diploma/GED
  • CA drivers license
  • Valid EMT license
  • Valid CPR card
  • Valid CPAT card

The CPAT or Candidate Physical Ability Test, is a physical ability course to determine an individual’s ability to perform the arduous work of becoming a firefighter. For more information, or to schedule one, visit https://www.fctconline.org/cpat/

  • For Salinas Fire, all applicants must be 18 years or older at time of application.
  • After completing the Academy, Probationary Firefighters will be assigned an Engine and Crew. The Assignments are broken in 3, 6 month periods (trimester). Probationary firefighters will complete a six month trimester in each of the cities districts (North, East, & South)
  • Salinas Firefighters work a 48/96 schedule. That is a 48 shift, followed by 96 hours off.

After probation, Firefighters are encouraged to continue professional development. Some of the programs available in Salinas include;

  •  Paramedic
  • Tactical Paramedic (SWAT)
  • Hazmat Team
  • Mechanic
  • Dog Handler
  • NFIR’s report checker
  •  Honor Guard
  • Recruitment Task Force
  • Training Coordinator
